Covid-19: Walk-in Services Temporarily Suspended

For more information, please see the following page on our website: Coronavirus 2019 (COVID 19) Response

What to know before you go

Our walk-in services are changing.

We can no longer prepare your state tax return for you.

Beginning January 2017, Tax Department employees are no longer permitted to help you prepare your West Virginia State Tax Returns at any of our walk-in locations. We apologize for any inconvenience and recommend that you seek assistance with your tax preparation needs through one of the many nonprofit services provided statewide.

Walk-In Services Available

At all regional offices statewide, we can:

  • Accept completed tax returns along with any payments due.
  • Prepare vouchers for taxpayers and accept billing payments.
  • Resolve issues regarding letters received by taxpayers.
  • Provide Letters of Good Standing to taxpayers.
  • Issue new and duplicate Business Registration certificates.

You can also get a hard copy of both the state’s Personal Income Tax and Business Registration booklets.

Suggested Resources

VITA – By appointment only.

The VITA program offers free tax preparation to low-moderate income taxpayers. IRS-certified volunteers help eligible taxpayers in local communities e-file their returns.

During filing season, locate the VITA site nearest you at http://irs.treasury.gov/freetaxprep/ or call 1-800-906-9887.

AARP (TCE) – By appointment only

The TCE program offers free tax help for everyone, with priority assistance to taxpayers who are 60 years of age and older, specializing in questions about pensions, and retirement issues unique to seniors.

During filing season, locate the TCE site nearest you at https://secure.aarp.org/applications/VMISLocator/searchTaxAideLocations.action or call 1-888-227-7669.

In addition to traditional face-to-face tax preparation, the IRS offers a self-assistance service at many VITA and TCE locations for those with a simple tax return and who just need access to a computer. A volunteer will guide these filers through the process.

For those taxpayers who have a computer available, but don’t gross more than $67,000 annually, www.MyFreeTaxes.com http://www.MyFreeTaxes.com/ is available online.

For more detailed information on free tax preparation, please go to https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p4225.pdf.
